April 6, 2013 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: high 40s-50, steady rain
Comments:
Slept in a bit, did a bunch of online shopping for vitamins and supplements, which my mom has been pushing on me for a while. Gonna try a few and see what happens.
Didn't leave 'til past 930, and didn't get on the trail til 1030. Did some "Rupp Warm-up", which felt good to "actively stretch"; some drills, then went for it.
Exactly same loop as last week, including full jet pack. Only this time I took an EFS flask. The idea was to keep things EASY, and to take yesterday's concepts - FORWARD, ELBOWS - and apply it to the trail.
Took half the Hardesty climb to wake up, but once I did, I felt good. The effort was "easy!" I was a bit worried that easy would equal slow, but I still split 65:00 on a muddy-as-hell climb. The weather was garbage, so I spent maybe 30s up there before continuing on. Took three good pulls off the gel flask: I like that Mocha, it tastes like butterscotch!
I didn't push the effort, but I did push the efficiency: quick feet on the downs, using the arms, staying forward. Had a pretty good ridge run over to Lost Creek - the sugar was AWESOME! What a boost!!
Also worked the downhill on Lost Creek, trying to stay forward and actively use the arms on the downs to promote turnover. Once on the road, I took more pulls and, unlike last week, did not actively press the pace; rather, I simply kept forward and used elbows. Deuced halfway.
I was astonished to find that my road pace was nearly identical to last week's, with much less effort. Wow!
On the Goodman Trail, it was more of the same: quick feet, stay forward. It was muddy as hell at points, precluding quickness at times. Felt GOOD, and not particularly tired, except for the final up/down climbs. This trail is such a good sim for Somoma: relentless ups and downs (25' to 100') that characterizes the bulk of that race.
Navigated a whole mess of mud at the end and rolled in at 2:48. This route used to take me 3:00. Pretty sure 2:48 is a PR, which is awesome, considering how effortless it felt.
Rather than do a hard Jimothy mile, I did 5x strides in the parking lot.
After these past two days, I FINALLY feel like I'm ready for Somona: with fitness, [at least fleeting] efficiency, and energy.
The steady rain was huge today: it pretty much washed out all the pollen! Felt fine after the run, and didn't get sick on the way home, or once back in town.
