Hardesty + Lost Creek w/Matt

April 27, 2013 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 40s-high 50s, sunny

Comments:
Ran EARLY with Matt - at his house at 0600 and on the trail before 0700. This was Matt's first big-time climb and long run. He's done a trail marathon, but not the relentless Canyones-Caliber climb like Hardesty. He was nervous, but I assured him we'd go easy.

Ate somewhat late last night (9PM), and no breakfast other than tea. No fuel, no water on this run. Wore the HR monitor to watch the effort.

Major form focus for us both today: "bow forward, use the hips and arms". Super-easy climb up Hardesty: the HR was in the 140s nearly the whole time (130-150-low). Thought we might sneak under 70, but hit 71. He mentally struggled, but did great. From there, I let him lead the rolling-ridge with slightly more walking than I would've done. Again, mostly mental, I think. Then the long descent.

I began to feel pretty worn on the descent: that same feeling when running at WS Camp with Meghan - going slower than I would've liked; not true aerobic fatigue, just WEAR. It's going to be hard - but SUPER IMPORTANT - to replicate that at camp this year, so as to "burn fat", be form-focused, and not-overwork. The HR monitor will be key for that.

Matt struggled a bit on the downhill road segment (21, instead of the usual 18:xx grind), but once we got on the final trail segment on Goodman, I let him lead and he did really well! Kept a nice pace on the flat/downhill rollers. Meanwhile I was in back, trying to yoga-breathe with mouth closed. It was a hard on the ups but otherwise doable.

The last section of Goodman Trail is tough: 30-90s second bitch climbs. I told Matt, "If you can do this without walking, you'll achieve Beast status!". He took that to heart and pushed well over the last section - probz harder than I would've liked, because my HR spiked into the 160s".

Finished in 3:09. WORN, but otherwise good. Sat in the dry, sunny parking lot at 10AM, done with a 3hr run, very cool. Had a couple Spring Reigns from Matt's keg and relaxed. Fun morning!

Matt officially burst my bubble on this route. It's not 20, and I knew that. Guess I'll call it 18 for now on. Fucking GPS watches...

Side note: wore the PI Trail N1's today, the ones Nick told me not to wear at Sonoma. I like 'em! A bit more heel DRAAAHP than I'd like, especially with a cranky heel.

Had Matt work on my L ankle a bit, since I knew it was still stiff. The L lateral foot got a bit worn, but not too bad.

Rest of the day: didn't do much. Came home, ate, cleaned up...did laundry. Felt really tired! But then I figured: "OK, I haven't taken allergy meds today (I did later that afternoon), no caffeine, just ran 3hr/18mi with no food...".

But I also feel a bit of "depression" about this Chelsea shit. It just sucks. Thought a lot about it today. Didn't write any more...but I want to finish it soon.

Wanted to do something fun tonight, but just didn't have it in me. Ugh. Oh Eugene...how I love - and simultaneously hate - you. Cliff called me, but I didn't get back to him 'til 8PM. I know he wants to "take me out", but while I do want to go out with other single guys, I'm apprehensive and wary about being a "pick-up artist". Yuck. No. I just want to meet people and have fun, not try to "get something".

So I didn't go out. Oh well...
