Diamond Peak Trail - DP Wilderness

October 6, 2013 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 40F, sunny

Comments:
Weird "day". Slept 'til maybe 0030, tossed and turned 'til 0230, then got up and made a fire 'til 0330, then went back in the tent 'til 0630. Packed up at 0700 (another fire), then hiked out at 0745.

The idea was to head out a bit early to get a run in before the fellas. I had a nutty idea of 2hr, but I was gonna go at least 1hr. Found my way back through the woods (like, <10' from the split, not bad compass navigation!), then the 1/2mi to the lake. Dropped off my shit and headed back up the trail.

The Diamond Peak Trail runs roughly N-S along the west ridge of the mountain, so I figured I'd just run south on that for a while. Just as I was about to hit that T-intersection, I came upon Mr Roberts, who just burst from the woods. We chatted for a minute, then I took off. Knowing he was already out, I'd only do 1hr, so he wouldn't be waiting. But we still didn't know when Dan-O would emerge.

I dreaded this run at first, but...I really came around pretty quick. Stride felt OK and my breath felt sustainable, though I had to go slow as shit at >6K' altitude. Ran over several rollers on pretty rocky trail, but in the end, it was fun. Went out 31, and back in 29, walking only a couple times when my HR pegged in the 160s.

When I got back, Dan-O was there, so the 3 of us hiked out. End of another Solo Fast.

I have mixed feelings about it this year. Nothing super-inspiring, though I was drunk on Chelsea's bullshit a year ago, and that undoubtedly intensified the experience. In short, what I felt out there:

- Lonely
- Bored
- Cold
- Weak
- Claustrophobic

are the precise things I fear most as I grow older - the exact opposite of the life I want to live.
