Road run "grinder"

June 15, 2014 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 70? dry/pollen-y

Comments:
Woke up with the vigor of a man under deadline: ate breakfast, then got to Allan Bros before ten to write. Grinded out on the column 'til after 1, then went home to run.

I wanted a quality, good-form run today. Just because I'm HR disciplined doesn't mean I can't/won't/don't run hard anymore. In fact, I felt like I needed to do a longer, sustainable "tempo".

Ran into South Eug and it didn't take long for the allergies/asthma to crank up. Had to back off the pace to keep in the 130s. Got a little discouraged, but regrouped after a poop stop at Fairmount Park, then decided to start grinding.

Just wanted to run "medium hard" for a while, like I used to, so I just started going. Was form-focused:

- NO SWIVZ, strong/quick elbows
- forward hip hinge
- "flick & pull" - my old form cue to facilitate pawback and hip extension.

Felt pretty good running on the roads through Alton, then the bike path. Didn't feel too hard, but Suunto said i was running low 6s. Kept at it, but as I went along, I could feel the tightness in my throat, typical of the "asthma". But I kept rolling.

Crossed the VRC bridge and came back the other side, running all the way back to Skinner park. Ran easy from there, the mile back to my house.

Post-run: TIRED/tight lungs, but felt pretty OK.

So Suunto said I ran only 6:10-:20 miles. But I mapped this run on Google and it was 5% longer than Suunto registered. That = 20 sec/mile, which would put those miles in the 5:50-6:10 range. I like that better.

Wrapped up my column tonight: I'm really happy with it and excited for it to come out.
