to RWB Camp - Night Run

November 14, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 40, cold

Comments:
Up early: around 4AM. Got packed up, and Emily picked me up and drove me to the airport.

The EUG flight was late leaving, but we got out. The weather was shitty all over Oregon, but just barely OK in EUG. Got out 20min late, and, as such, barely had any time to catch my SAT flight...so NO coffee or breakfast! Ugh. But at least I got the flight, which also had Pam and Mac Smith on it.

Got to SAT, and I promptly got a Starbz Americano and two saucy-B's. Found the RWB crew and bus, and ran into NOSAJ. I guess it was the first time I'd seen him in person since TNF '11! Shit, a lot has gone down since then!

It was about a 3hr bus ride into complete bumblefuck Texas. Our only stop was at a tiny general store in the middle of nowhere, where their only beer was total shit: Lone Star, Shiner Boch, then the complete shit. We all piled into the store and bought 'em out of most of their beer, then got back onto the bus to Camp Eagle.

There were 150 total campers: maybe 120 bonafide campers (maybe 80 of them were vets, 40 non), and maybe 30 mentors: both "elite runners" and non. The elite folks:

- me
- Nosaj
- Dom and Katie
- Pam Smith
- Meghan
- Ford Smith
- Sabrina Little
- Paul Terranova
- Alison & Jason Bryant

There may be more, but that's what I can remember right now.

After check-in, we all met for a night run at around 8PM. It was going to be CHILLY all weekend: like 50s at a max, and as cold as 20F! Friday night wasn't too bad, but it was pants and long sleeves to start.

All of the area around Camp Eagle - a pretty big camp complex - is Texas Hill Country very similar to Bandera, which was cool. We ran from camp, along a ridgeline and up to the top of a ridge, then a few more miles before heading back to camp. Fun to run in a big ol' group.

Had a good chat with Ford Smith, then now-18 year old ultra phenom from Austin. TRULY nice kid. Super-friendly, and down-to-earth.

After the run, I retired to my "cabin", which had 8 or so bunks in it...co-ed! That was a little weird.

A little wrinkle: on Wednesday night, I got an email from Meredith Terranova. She was supposed to give a nutrition lecture to the campers (to each of the four groups), but she was OUT with strep throat, so she asked ME to do it. I was totally OK with it, but I didn't do shit to prep for it on Wed or THu night, but after thinking about it, I began to grind out a Powerpoint (on my computer, which I brought along). I was interrupted by Liza to go check on "The Matt Hart", who rolled his foot on the Tejas rocks. His foot is fine, but he was all sensitive about it (whatevs, dude), but it was good to meet him and chat a bit.

Long day, and I was happy to hit the sack. Not even a heavy snorer would keep me from a big sleep...
