RWB Camp - Day 2

November 15, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: cold most of the day!

Comments:
Woke up early...because everyone else did. Went to breakfast, but skipped the first run so I could finish my powerpoint for my nutrition lecture.

Gave a lecture in the AM, then another in the PM. They went WELL and they were really fun! All of them were in this cabin-like building a bit off from the main camp. It was cold as shit in there so someone had made a fire, but the plume wasn't open so it was smokey as shit! That, and the TV wasn't working, so I lectured to about 30 people off my laptop for the first class!

Run #1 for me was late-morning, after the first lecture: more technical trail. I hung way in the back of the "fast group" while a few folks hammered a bit. Mentors in the fast group:

Leads: Jay Danek, Steven Moore, Jason Bryant
"Elites": me, Dom, Nosaj, Paul Terranova

The MO of the camp was, even on these runs, you'd run between 1-2K, then stop, regroup, and talk about stuff. We did some group intros on this first run, ran about 4mi, total, over an hour.

After lunch, I took a quick nap, then gave my 2nd lecture, which went better, by virtue of having a working TV! After that, it was time for run #2, working "intervals and uphill work".

It was then that Max King showed up! Apparently in the blizzard+ice storm of Oregon, his plane was delayed out of Bend, but he made it. Super-nice guy, and doubly-nice to all the campers and us.

We jogged between the flat riverbed area toward a hill climb. I drifted to the back just to watch him run. FANTASTIC (though subtle) pelvic power...again, one of the few, FEW who do it consistently well. It was a good reminder for me to get that going: I know how to do it, but I can't do it well, or consistently...but it was great to watch him run.

We did about another four, doing some downhill repeats. Fucking Jason Bryant is a crazy fucker on downhills! Jesus! I don't think it's sustainable in a long ultra, but fuck! He can outrun Max (or at least hold his own) on downs. Dom is up there too, but...c'mon, we know he poses better than anyone. :-P

PM: awesome presentation by Mike Ehredt, who ran across America twice (W->E, N->S) to plant a flag for every soldier KIA'd in Iraq and Afghanistan. Awesome guy.

After the presentation, I hung out with Pam and Mac in their hotel-like room, with Paul T and his sister+bro in law.

Fun day!
