Hoffman Park Hill Repeats

December 24, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
I was bummed to find out the indoor track at UW-RF is closed today. Damn! So instead of track repeats, I'd do hill work.

Same weather, again, today: mid-30s and damp, but no rain! What a gift! Wore shorts again, but took a while to warm-up.

Ran the Constitutional route: to Main St via Shopko, then around to Hoffman Park and "The Mound", my all-time favorite running place.

The Mound is maybe 200' above city level, which isn't much, but is a solid short hill burst. On top, there is a "1709m" loop that's 95% flat - that's where I've done hundreds of loops in my life. BUT, there's also multiple climbers going up, including a steep double-track we used to do repeats on.

So I ran a big loop, dropped down one side (practicing a fast, quasi-technical descent), then looped around to the dirtroad, where I'd charge up, then run a hard 600m flat over the top.

I used to know precisely where the 800 (200m down the hill) mark was, but I went longer than that, which is probably good so I couldn't accurately compare today's time to "old me".

Went moderately quick up the first one, then fairly hard on the flat...and split 3:36. Ugh. Hmmm. Mayyybe it's 850m?

Jogged the rest of the loop around and down, then repeated...except the 2nd time, I started a good 30m earlier, so I was shocked that, despite pushing harder, I'd run 3:43!! I realized my mistake on the 3rd. Did a 4th for good measure. The splits:

3:36
3:43 (long)
3:32
3:29

Thought A LOT hammering down GEORGE and Laney: very similar topography between this hill and route, and Bandera. So it was good practice to run truly HARD uphill, then hard over.

From there, I ran a shortened, direct way home. Good 12 mile run.

PM: met my friend Max for coffee before church. He's doing...OK, but not great. I invited him over to the house, which he obliged.

Went to church with mom and the bros, then Brandie's family came by. There was some drama due to the fact that Nate may or may not have had the flu, but I bought masks and he and I wore them.

GOOD night with family and Max. He and I were going to go on a PM run, but we ran out of time.
