WTC Course - near the firehouse down to NH, then the course to the FH

February 7, 2015 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: pretty warm --> really hard rain --> overcast

Comments:
Pretty good AM: slept in, then went to Folsom to watch Sara run. Wasn't too tired or sluggish, which was good. Also, it'd stopped torrentially raining, which was nice!

Reconvened back at Rocklin at 12:30, then drove together to Cool. The *idea* for this run was to run easy to ALT, then go hard past BB, up and over Goat, then easy in.

That was *the plan*...

BGD led us, fast as hell on the descent. Of course, C.A. had no problem going along, and I was scarcely hanging on. Same thing once we got onto the flat-ish Quarry Road: pushing.

I thought, "OK, well, I guess this is how it's gonna be!"

"I guess it's ON!"

So...we pushed a little. Sometimes - SOMETIMES - you have to tell your heart rate monitor to fuck off. I left mine at home, so we just rolled.

Pushed pretty aggressively into developing rain along the rollers of Quarry, then tamed things a bit once on American Canyon Trail, when the skies all-out opened up on us. Total deluge climbing up to the WS-Tevis trail, running through a mud river.

Once on the formal WS-Tevis, I had Callie Alice run in front, since she'd never been on the trail...and she just HAMMERED. It was awesome, so I was like, "Welp...guess this is happening!" and tucked in. We rolled FAST to ALT, and had a brief stop there (for a deuce and gel).

The plan all along was to PUSH HARD from ALT to BB (per Matt Keyes' recommendation), so after that short regroup and fuel...we did. I led out for the first kilo, then C.A. tripped and fell and we paused a bit, then I had her in front. But I was feeling a little antsy so at a water crossing (a mini-creek now gourging), I skipped past her and pushed pretty damn hard. But it felt GREAT.

Split about a 34 (including our brief stop/regroup). I waited maybe only 30s for CA to pull up, then she and I pushed to the base of Goat...but I forgot which way, so we waited about 2min for BGD to catch up, then we pushed hard to the top of Goat.

One last regroup, then we went pretty easy for the rest of the way.

I felt a little bonky over the last couple miles, but water at 49 helped.

FANTASTIC RUN. Felt GOOD to just throw caution and conservatism to the wind and just PUSH, for cripes sake. Ran with a bit of anger and aggression today, which has been absent the past two years. Good stuff.

Amazing work by Callie Alice. If she joined Strava, she'd pound every women's CR on the WS + Tevis trail, no doubt. She's gonna be a force someday, and soon....

PM: left ankle was OK on the run, with some on and off pain, but the ACHILLES was tight and squeeky! Damn it! Oh well.

Had a GREAT dinner at Boneshaker. No Sara, which was a bummer, but it was good to have BGD and C.A. get to know one another, a bit.

BGD seemed...a little down, kind of all weekend. Not sure if it's winter fatigue, maybe a little HUNGZ from the Phillipines trip, or if something's bugging him. The only regret from the trip is not having 1-on-1 time with him...
