Alter-G at Recharge, 10min powerhike

February 28, 2015 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: snowy, cold --> indoors!

Comments:
Slept in 'til 8 at Pete's, then hung out for a while, having coffee. Didn't go to any of the AM poster presentations; we decided to go to Recharge, instead.

Pete works at a little PT clinic inside Recharge, which is an "athlete recovery lounge" -slash- gym, which includes things from ice whirlpools, saunas, "goalie pads", and anything else you could possibly think of. But what they've also got is an Alter-G treadmill!

So Pete got me set up in it, and I gave it a go. It's like running in the hole of an inner-tube. This has some interesting effects, besides elevating you and decreasing weightbearing:

- it's way easier to control the trunk and pelvis, as it's literally holding you there
- it makes you swing your arms better (and not low), as the tube goes at your upper pelvis

Their set-up also had cameras hooked into a TV right in front of you, so I watched a close-up on my feet. YEESH. The true colors have come out: they're SOOO abducted I look like a JV girl. The orthotics and tape help it, but I have to really think about:

a.) just engaging the ball of the foot, big toe and calf to push off, AND
b.) I actually do have to "turn in" the foot some. Really.

Ran for about four miles, then did about a mile (not quite) on the treadmill uphill hiking.

Saw both Stephanie Howe and Mario Mendoza there, again. Man, it's just nice to have a volume of fast, hard-working trail runners in a town! Eugene has that potential, but we're a far-cry from it right now.

PM: picked up Callie Alice at 1230, who took the bus here from EUG. Went to the afternoon session of the conference, which included a decent presentation by Nikki Kimball. Had a nice chat with her afterward.

PM PM: to Crux brewpub, then a place downtown with CA, then back to Pete's.

Good day. Achilles felt 90% good, and little to no symptoms after the workout session.
