Fun double with Callie Alice...with some tough love

April 19, 2015 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Today is our 4-month anniversary, so CA had some surprise in order. But the day started off with a little duathlon.

We ran around 9:30ish, easy through West PRE. Major focus on "elite feet' again and straight up and down feet with, "elite arms" - something I picked up from the track meet. Felt pretty good, despite yesterday's workout. HR was outrageously LOW, which was interesting. Sometimes this is more of a fatigue indicator than "better fitness", so I'm not sure what to think.

We stopped in Alton to talk to Michael Lebowitz (the Waldo photog), and when we restarted, CA let on that her left leg was really hurting her.

UGH.

So we chatted on the way back. I told her that she needs to TRULY let the leg rest, and that she has to learn to "LET GO": to be OK to not run in order to heal. I told her that it took me a while to fully "let go" and let my achilles heal, but once I did, I was able to fully recover.

And then I dropped a little bomb: that she needs to learn to be happy without running. That if running well and running a lot is the basis for happiness, then it's a setup for dysfunctional running and disappointment.

I shared with her some frustration and challenge that her injury has for ME:

- that if she runs, she's constantly in pain, which frustrates her
- that if she DOESN'T run, she's constantly vocalizing how she wishes she could run (as she did a good 4-6x yesterday, after I rolled 20 with Mike).

So, either way, if I recommend no running or "powering through", it puts me in a bad, lose-lose position. She just HAS to get healthy!

This message upset her quite a bit, and she spent the ensuing bike ride brewing over that. But in the end, we had a good chat and she understood where I was coming from.

Wore the N1s + customs.

Side note: I've realized that I need to spend MORE time in "sub-MAF"...or below what I've been doing: instead of 135-145, more like 120-130. This was a good start.
