EASY McKenzie River Trail with CA

June 14, 2015 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 80s, hot!

Comments:
Slept in a ton, then finally rolled out of bed and ate, then hit the road for McKenzie. We both want to run MRT50K, so the idea was EASY outbound, then quicker (progression tempo) inbound.

Got warm, quick, and was high 80s when we left. It's never terribly hot on the trail (lower sections), but you could feel it. We were running CA's new MAF HR (145) and it's REALLY slow, so we were doing seriously like 12-13 minute (light uphill) trail miles. Felt fine, though, and I'll do anything to have her progress well.

Made it to Deer Creek AS in a very slow 105 minutes (the classic outbound 100-minute). From then, I took off solo, with CA running her own pace.

Felt sluggish at first, then GOOD to open things up. Kept the HR on the initial inbound in 130-140s, then when I hit Buck Bridge went 160+. Felt strong, and pushed the hills. Stopped (no watch stop) for water at the spring as I was HOT and PARCHED.

Again, had to ease off to keep the HR threshold (other than one hill push). Really worked on the old "Pelvic opening hill stride" - an old technique I always forget that I seem to remember on the lighter hills at MRT: extending and opening the hips gives excellent power and actually "stretches" open the lungs! Very cool.

Finished in like 68...after an outbound of 105! HA! CA wasn't too far behind, actually. Good runs for us, both, though I had R (and later B) hamstring tightness.

PM: stopped at the Blue Sky mart for snacks, then went to CA's favorite fishing spot to hangout. Good day.
