CLR - leg 16 - (not too) dusty dirt road

July 31, 2015 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: cold! dark

Comments:
Leg 11: handed off to Jason, who logged yet another sub or 7-flat pace leg for 7 miles (of mostly flat and downhill). This was his third leg, so for him to maintain 7-flat pace is pretty damn impressive. The sun was going down at this point, and all things were quite enjoyable, including spending this time with CA. :-)

Leg 12: Danette took it 5.x miles into Silver Lake. While here, we stopped at a gas station - the first civilization since Diamond Lake - and bought a bunch of stuff, including a couple beers, and a footlong hotdog for me - a dubious purchase that I would regret the remainder of the trip.

Leg 13: Megan ran her third leg, 5.6 miles, and her hamstring got even worse. Uh-oh. We're now on a long-ass, straight north-south dirt road into the dark. Really fucking dusty! Ugh.

Leg 14: Phil ran 6.4 miles, with a nice post-popcorn puke run back in the 8s, handing off to me.

First total darkness leg for me. I donned a mask to combat the dust, as well as the juniper pollen that was making me sneeze. I'd taken an allegra earlier so I thought I was OK, but I think, in retrospect, it did flare my HR.

Grinder 6.7 miles on a super-douche grade (net 200' climb). The story of the overnight legs was, "I thought I was running way faster", and such was the case for me. Since I was going to hand off to CA, I didn't take the HRM and went by feel and breathing.

Felt pretty good: major form and breathing-focused, once again, but the dirt road was soft at times. But thankfully the van traffic was dwindling and, at times, it was peaceful and beautiful to look up at the Big Dipper while running through a scrub brush high desert field.

Ran like 48:43 for the 6.7 miles (7:14 pace). Solid, but slower for how hard I was working.

After this leg? I was officially tired.

Started this leg around 12:30, but will log it as Friday.
