April 12, 2016 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: cold rain, but not that cold (high 50s)
Comments:
My turn to lead. I was gonna do something fun or a Barkley hunt, but:
- A. the weather was supposed to be shit (and was)
- B. I somehow got poison oak on my boobs (like 3 finger print spots but bad) yesterday, and didn't want more
So I opted for a mellow, boring hunt. Or so I thought.
Lewis said we have "royalty" at the hunt tonight, and sure enough, we had an LB! He and Laurie drove up after Sonoma, and will be here for several days.
Hunters tonight:
- ALL the OGs, pretty much: me, Lewis, Tommy, Dan-o, and LB
- Hammer, Emily, CB
No CA tonight, who was resting from Sonoma.
Did a vanilla-ish hunt, downhill to Tugman, then up by LB's old place, then up Donald St, on the Butte to Butte 10K course, climbing all the way up close to Ridgeline. But instead of bombing the road down (or climbing farther to the singletrack), I cut along the powerline roads.
The problem: No trespassing signs everywhere. There's weird easements in there, with some driveways and such, but it IS runnable.
We were about 80% of the way through - and past about 3 No Tresspassing signs, and were hopping a gate, when we looked back and this bigger guy in his 30s came SPRINTING down the trail, big ol' wide arms, wearing CROCS. He was pissed and started yelling, "Didn't you hear me?"
But we were super-calm and acted half-stupid (because we were; we didn't know the way to go). Once tempers simmered down, he explained he'd just bought the place and is trying to control pedestrians. Long story short, the situation was defused, he showed us the right way to get through, and on we went. It was A LOT like the classic story off Chicken Hawk Rd a few WSER camps ago, when they were stopped by a druggie and a shotgun...but 90% less scary.
Ran down the trail, to Headwaters, then back on Rexius. Rained a teeny bit at first, but got progressively harder into a full rain.
Good chats with LB. A little WS and Auburn gossip but not much. Once back, CA met us with the hunt beer and we cheers'd to Greg Soderlund's memory, who died last night. He'd had kidney (and other) cancers forever, and this last round of treatment basically failed. So he stopped kidney dialysis (which just sucks)...and he died 5 days later. Sad deal.
Fun social. Grayson, Laurie and Carrie filtered in later.
It was good, and interesting, to have LB back. People REALLY suck up to him in this weird fraternal way. I try not to...just because it's weird. He was pretty nice, and not overly opinionated and negative like he can be at times, which was good.
Good run. Felt really good, despite the weights and low nutrition earlier in the day. Wore the Salomons again.
