Waldo 100K - pacing CA from Charelton

August 20, 2016 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Hot - 70-80ish

Comments:
GOOD day. Slept decent enough - not many skeeterz, thankfull, but it got cold! Up at 3:45 to cook her some eggs and get her ready. After Lexi and I saw her off at the start line, we headed back to camp to sleep in 'til 6:45, then got up to eat breakfast, ourselves.

Co Jones came along with us at 7:30 to head down to Mt Ray. CA looked great in top ten overall there, and was quick in and out. From there, we headed up to Charelton. Chatted for a while with Twiet and Elke before CA came through at about 10:40 - a really solid split - and far ahead as F1. She was a little stiff, so I worked on her hips, then we took off!

AS section details

to 4290
- She had quite a bit of gut-rot from pounding too much protein shake at Charelton, so there were a couple bathroom stops
- pretty solid "sustainable" pace (like 10s on the rollers)
- yo-yo'd with Taylor Spike and Nick Alden

to Twins 2
- got sponged and doused at 4290, with more ice in the bandana
- some decent slow-down in here: some of it "fear fatigue" - being so deep into the race, but having SO far to go, yet. There was by far the most uphill walking in this section
- did a good job of strong hiking up and over the Twins, then descended pretty dang good!
- overall made good work of this critical section
- It was really cool to see a lot of familiar faces at Twins 2

to Maiden Peak AS
- we got real Gatorade from Lexi, and more ice
- we were just about flying on this section, which included a couple low-8 splits
- she was RUNNING up most of the climbs, which was impressive
- good fueling at Maiden AS

to Maiden Lake (up and over the peak)
- TOUGH, TOUGH section, gosh
- It was hot and she was really working hard. I've done this twice in the race, and thrice as a pacer (and another 8+ times in training), yet it never ceases to surprise me how goddamn hard it is to get up this mountain!
- this was about the closest she got to the mental breaking point: first at the steepest parts of the hike (about 0.75mi from the top), then on the initial descent.
- got some good buoyancy from OD at the junction - twice - then Hannah at the top. It was gorgeous up there
- On the descent, her abs started to cramp, she freaked out, and had a mini-asthma attack, but recovered
- solid descent down Leap of Faith, but was still pretty tentative all the way to Maiden Lake
- Maiden Lake: TONS of friendly faces helped us in and out!

to the Finish
- after some initial hiking, she got her run on. I officially counted 15 "shitburger climbs": any slight up from 10-30s in length. She ran all but about 3 of them
- she ran, but her top-end speed wasn't great. We passed two people in this section (guys), but one got us.
- Once at the Rosaries, we passed another guy...but was passed by a different guy in the last mile.

Overall, she ran pretty extraordinary, especially for her first 100K! Really impressive, and I was really proud to be there to experience it.

Me:
- felt...OK. Tired and a little sore from the workout yesterday (left lateral foot and some right abs?)
- it was a pretty fatiguing effort. I didn't drink enough water, didn't eat much (3 bites of Payday, and some gatorade and coke), and the slow pace felt pretty brutal on my legs, namely my feet
- it's NEVER easy to pace here. It was brutal all three times (Rob Hendrickson '11, BGD '12, and now CA '16).

Post-race
- hung out, guzzled fluid, then showered
- ate dinner, drank a couple beers, and cheered and talked to folks
- hung out for awards ($500, TWO puffies, and TWO pairs of Salomon shoes for CA)
- left at 8:30
- went out in EUG for a bit (beer at Barn Light, then fritters for tomorrow)
- I came home at 11 and pounded more food before bed

Good day!

Wore the yellow N2 trails...
