Rabbit Ears Pass (Steamboat) up and down

September 17, 2016 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 60...warm but breezy

Comments:
Slept in pretty good, then packed up and headed to town. We finally got some gas for cooking, but didn't make breakfast - went to Creekside again. This place is DAMN good. But the wait was nearly an hour, so we grabbed coffee, first.

Had an excellent breakfast...then figured out how to get Kelly home! Wound up having him get a shuttle from a hotel, so after doing some internet work, we off-loaded his stuff and bid him goodbye. Really wish he didn't have to go back early, but that was his call!

From there, we grabbed groceries and got the hell out of (a way over-crowded) "Dodge". Drove up to Rabbit Ears pass to run. Turns out this was an aid station for the 50M, and it was just closing. There in the dirt lot was Nikki Kimball and her "friend' Carlos. Chatted with her quite a lot (REALLY nice), then took off to run.

The road-trail to Rabbit Ears was about 3 miles and 1000' up. I was uncertain about how this would feel, but...it turned out pretty good! We were at maybe 9k' and wound up over 10', but we kept the effort mellow. Took some pics at the top...then quick-footed down!

REALLY surprised and happy with how 'spry' I felt! Pretty cool!

Rest of the day:
- kept driving east, toward Foco
- stopped in a little town for bottle beer
- found a random campground (Crags Campground) in "State Forest State Park". Only a few other cars in the 20+ remote site. Set up with time for good sundown light, made a fire, then made dinner and had some beers!

FINALLY in the woods, and it was awesome! Good start-finishing touch to a weird weekend!
