RWB OCR Race - 2nd Place (18:05)

October 9, 2016 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: mid-80s, pretty hot

Comments:
Thought I could get the W this year, without Jason Bryant in the field, and no Nosaj or Max. But Ford was RTG and pushed hard from the outset. I was right on his tail in the first half-mile to the rope climbs. He started doing the ropes out of order, so I hopped in front of him for the vertical climb. It was HARD when I practiced, and goddamn it, I almost didn't do it. Got within a centimeter of "touching the metal ring" atop the 10' climb but missed and had to do it again. Grunted my way up and barely got it! After that, I was in front.

...but by the time we did the hundred "hop-overs" of the border rocks, I was GASSED. On top of that Ford reeled me in and was talking shit, MID-RACE. What a dickhead. I managed to hold him off 'til the river, but he plowed past me in the thigh-deep water. From there, I just held on.

Second overall, in 18:05. This year was a bit shorter:

- no mine shaft
- no wall - rope swing

but the vertical rope certainly added time, as did the extra rock hops!

Nice improvements from last two years:

2014: 22:24
2015: 19:42
2016: 18:05*

Rest of the day:
- always "feels good" to do that anaerobic blast! Showered and brought a couple beers to the "BBQ" (which was simply food in the cafeteria, lolz)
- had some good chats with several campers, then a long chat with Pam Smith, which was cool
- in bed by 10ish for an early wake-up!

Wore a trial demo pair of Salomon Sense. Good grip, but less comfy than the N1s.
