Exercise Type: Run
Weather: 90, hot & dry
Comments:
We drove west and south out of the park, then midway home, Bert and Courtney found a place where they could bike and we could run: a flat bike path along the CdL river, about 50 miles out of town.
I felt pretty heavy, for two reason:
1. the run yesterday
2. the pre-run snack
At a pit stop, I decided to "break the fast" with a variety of things, including a "Huckleberry shake", which turned out to be nothing more than crappy soft-serve "ice cream" blended with huckleberry "compote".
Why and how I did not "remember" that I'm now SUPER sensitive to dairy is beyond me. Pounded that, along with a "huckleberry bar" and some other stuff...only to find that less than an hour later, it was time for the second run!
The run was a disaster...but enlightening. Ran easy with CA for two miles along a pancake flat rails-to-trails, along a river, through the woods. Nice. But hot, dry.
The plan was to run a 4-mile tempo that day. At the 2 mile mark, we both turned back (since CA only wanted 4), and I'd tempo back to the car, then out a mile and back again.
The first mile felt sluggish but fine. As I ran past CA, she gave me some stride tips (Tall-forward, no swivz) and that helped. Split a 6:11 first mile going pretty easy, but it quickly went downhill after that.
I felt like garbage: tired, sluggish, breathing difficult ("Are we at altitude?" I wasn't sure) and building gut rot. Did the second mile back to the car (6:23), then stopped for about 90s. It was HOT. I felt TERRIBLE. Still, I went out again.
However, after passing CA coming in, I went out only a half-mile. Good thing, because I barely made the pit toilet on the inbound.
SO BAD. Felt awful.
Thus, I finally realized how outrageously sensitive I am to DAIRY. Crap! It wasn't just the gut, either, it was the asthma (which I've felt consistently for months) and the overall poor energy.
But...it explains a lot. In fact, it 100% explains why SONOMA was so shitty: pounding coffee with half and half and heavy cream in it. Ever since Giardia #1, dairy digestion has been impaired, and it's been even worse (or more noticeable) since #2.
Really dumb on my part, but glad I've finally realized.
Post-run:
- Miserable for a couple hours, but we went into this old restaurant bar ("the oldest in Idaho", since 1880) for a beer, then drove to Moscow
- good dinner at B&C's: great brats and salad
