July 14, 2018 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: 70, nice
Comments:
We bled a ton of time in our second legs. We still held out hope that we could catch that Master's team, so when we saw them leave the final check-point -- and it was a slower runner! -- I got excited, thinking I had a chance to catch 'em. This segment was along the Yaquina River, and we were close enough to the Pacific that it really cooled down nicely. It was also our first exchange with any amenities, so out of desperation, I ran inside a little general store and bought a can of Mountain Dew! I was gonna be FUELED!
I pounded only about a third of it...and watch the time tick by. I figured I could *maybe* make up six minutes...but as the minutes went from 8 to 10...I threw out the remaining Dew.
Our penultimate guy Bryce ran a solid leg (probably mid to high 6s), but I was too far out.
I still ran hard, though. I kept the breathing in check, but I was definitely working. Really worked the hinge, pawback, etc. It was winding but mostly flat 'til we got close to town, then a little rolling up and down to the Bay -- which is full of tourists. You have to run THROUGH them: technically on the sidewalk. I chose to keep in the street and dodge rearview mirrors of slow-moving tourist cars, through the mall of chowder shops and taffy places.
By the time I hit the climb to the bay bridge, I was COOKED. I wasn't sure I could run up the hill, but I got a solid shuffle on, up the steep switchback hill, to the bridge, then up and over the long, donwhill span, that thankfully included a tailwind! I could see the other guys way below at Rogue, and I smiled -- SO happy to be running, and running hard again. This is the hardest (/farthest) I've run since February.
Ran down the stairs and along about 300m of bike path to the finish.
We finished at 5:30, good for about 8h50 min. We wound up 9 minutes behind. I made up at least 4 minutes. Oh well.
Post-run:
* posed for a pic with the guys, and sat and cooled off while they ate
* congratulated the Corvallis masters team
* finally ate
* headed back to the hotel, the "Sail Inn", to shower and enjoy a celebratory "Rainier Beer". "Good, not great". Fun hang-out though
* ate at Mo's (OK)
* went to a dive bar where they had Kaoraoke!
* CA showed up in time for me to sing a tune. First time she'd ever heard me.
* we left around 10 toward Yachats to sleep in the cool
Good day. Not too thrashed or spent.
