August 18, 2018 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: 70, warm race day
Comments:
Slept in at the Jaqua cabin. Slept really well and the air was good. After coffee and breakfast, we finally got out to the course.
This year we were helping at the 4290 aid station. There's been more turnover in the "Rainshadow Era" and it looks like The Hunt might take over this aid station. This year, a ski patrol guy was captaining it.
The road there is a disaster, so we drove the van to the beginning of the Charelton Lake Road, parked it, then ran there. We ran the half-mile to the CL aid, chatted with the Corvallis Group (now captained by Anne Miller and her boys) before running down the trail to 4290.
Felt OK. A little rough from weights, Friday, and the hard workout Thursday. A little asthmatic, but OK.
The aid station was pretty fun and not too tough. Lewis was there, and then a group from Eugene, captained by a ski patrol guy. Good folks, who did a pretty good job.
We had fun watching all the EUG'ers come through (in order):
Mr Bevel-Jaqua (in 3rd, "cramping" -- though he'd finish 3rd)
Emily!
Brent Adler
Hammer
Christian
David (my coaching client)
Evan
The AS closed at 2:15, after which we cleaned up and headed back to the Pass. Got there around 4ish, right after Nate finished, having run 10:50 or so: the same time he ran back in '13, when I was a place in front of him in 10:30.
The rest of the afternoon, we hung out, watching finishers. It was "fun" but tough, you know: watching and encouraging but not running. The usual.
We stayed too late, but it was worth it to see Evan come in at 8-something. CA has this big, final run planned on *the McKenzie course*, which is like 10 river drainages to the north, and we had planned to drive over there. But by the time we left, drove back to the cabin to get our stuff, it was 9PM. So we decided to sleep there, "since the air was good"...
Solid day.
