Exercise Type: Run
Weather: 40F down below, upper 40s up high! (inversion)
Comments:
It was a risk, but I decided to run a Hardesty loop with Brent and Callie. Brent is sort of like my Oregon BGD (it's a stretch, but he's for sure a quality guy) and we just finalized that we (really, both Callie and I) will be coaching him for his first 100 at Bighorn this summer!
So first order of business: Hardesty loop.
I was committed, because of my ankle-heels, to hike the whole Hardesty climb. That worked well at the coast last week, so I stuck to it. We got out early and started the run just after 8.
It didn't take long, sadly for CA and B to pull out of sight. Depressing, a little. I began to feel shitty about myself, then realized that it's better to be out here, then on my ass back home!
The hike up felt pretty solid, but actually hard! Worked really hard on whole foot and medial arch, and that worked my calves pretty good. I enjoyed the alone time, and this time kept the headphones off.
Summited in 93:30, which seemed pretty pedestrian. However, I was nose-breathing nearly the entire time.
After that, I decided I'd try to make it a "normal" loop and hit normal splits.
Ran aggressively downhill, then pushed on the uphills on Sawtooh. I thought I might run into them, since they were tacking on the 2+ June out and back, but I didn't, so I pushed down Lost Creek.
29:02. Solid split, but nothing amazing.
I had fun on that descent and felt pretty good initially, then - like usual - a little haggard at the bottom. But overall...pretty good!
26:13. Solid!
Once on the road, I tried to push a bit. Didn't push hard, but I tried to run uptempo. REALLY focused on the "butt back, cock up" posture! :-p With the metric of for sure being able to see my feet land below.
19:55. Pretty pedestrian.
From there, it was time for the Goodman trail. I think the fastest I ever did this was in 32-high or 33, when I was trying to impress CA on our "-2nd date" run up and down Eagles: at which time we went super-easy up Eagles, then hammered that final 4ish.
Today: I shuffled for a quarter mile, then gave it a slight push. The pelvis posterior posture felt really good and I had good control. AND the Topo Ultraventures are outstanding shoes!
At the creek, I thought I heard voices of Brent and CA, so I pushed even more - into legit hard breathing - on The Shitburger climbs, though I didn't feel fast.
Got to the parking lot with a solid final split:
36:59.
Overall: 3:26. This was about how fast I ran before Oregon Coast 50K, running a similar strategy. I think I felt better during and after. Good positive run.
The ankles were SOLID. I did have to really focus on letting them stretch open (and heel touch the ground), especially running the light ups. That natural stretch is crucial.
Wound up having to wait an additional half-hour for Brent and CA to show up (I guess Brent was dragging).
GOOD day. I feel really encouraged.
My gut feels 120%. Like, the best it's EVER been. (like, 90% solid deuces!)
My energy feels like 90%. Overall energy (not fitness)
My ankles...hmmm...66%. Getting there, but still a ways to go.
