January 12, 2019 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: mid 40s, nice and sunny!
Comments:
Up early again like last week, and off to Hardesty and there by ~8.
The idea for this week:
* start at Eula Ridge TH
* run down river back to Hardesty (South Willamette trail)
* turn up and do a Hardesty - then right back down
* double back on South Willamette
That would've gotten us about 19-20 miles. CA wanted big vertical to prep for Orcas Island 50K. I was reticent, but I didn't want her to go alone, or go longer.
I was grumpy for whatever reason (slept OK last night; gut was a bit off in the AM, but recovered from yesterday).
I led down South Willamette. LOTS of up and down on that route: like 3x 300+ gradual climbs (and downs) over 5ish miles. I felt a little pressured to run; had I been with myself I would've hiked a lot more. Ankles were OK, at first.
Once we got to Hardesty, I was feelling pretty good. We hammered down to the trailhead...then turned back up!
Once CA got in front and started, well, Running up Hardesty, that's when shit got real. Ugh. So hard! Doing a fresh Hardesty is a little tough; doing it not fresh is always brutal, and with my fitness? Super-brutal.
We ran, albeit not fast, the first half. I was struggling...and my ankles were getting worse, fast. So frustrating! Midway up, we decided to hike more, and that helped.
By the time we were close to the summit, I knew I was only good for a descent back to the trunk, which meant having to run down Eula Ridge Trail, which has the same vert as Hardesty, but one less mile!
We summited in like 79 (embarassing, but trying not to judge), then made our way down Eula. SO steep that, at several points, it wasn't running down, but "waddling"! Ridiculous.
That said, once we got past the super-steep upper half, the lower half was pretty enjoyable, mellow switchbacks. But by then the QWAAADZ were pretty cooked.
Solid run, but pretty demoralizing.
So out of shape.
Ankles still really stiff.
Afternoon:
* brunch
* were productive and worked on staining baseboards
* took a nap!
PM
* happy hour beer at Sam Bonds
* Blair Alley arcade (some free plays)
* dinner at Placidos
* home...to self-care: massage of lateral shins, cupping of shins, and contrast (ice-heat)
Didn't get to bed 'til 11:30
