May 28, 2019 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: 50, nice
Comments:
Met Brent early for Baldy repeats: my first once since I hurt myself, mid-February.
CA ran the warm-up with us, then ran easy.
The plan for Brent: all sub-12. That's moderately fast. When I started baldies in '14, I'd do low 11s, then got down to high 9s! CA usually do mid to high 10s.
I led the first one, and felt super-strong and easy. But I accidentally ran 11:00! Brent stuck with me for halfway, then fell back.
Downhill, he crushed: I was about 10s behind.
Second rep...he fell back. This is his (mental inexperience) M.O. He fell off right away, and since he did, I didn't really hold back.
Me: 10:45
Brent: 13:00!
Thankfully Brent is responsive to being "firm". I told him: "If we don't break 12 on the last one, we're doing a fourth". And I meant it.
I led the downhill (he, dreadfully, fell back a bit). Before starting I built him up, telling him (truthfully) how fit and strong he is, but that his flagging is mostly mental.
So off we went. He stuck with me about a third of the way before falling off. Halfway, I just stopped. When he caught up, I forced him to lead and pushed him onward.
Split: 11:50!
Solid work. Decent descent.
At the bottom, after 3:00 of jog rest to Martin St, we did the tempo mile. The first half is slightly downhill, then flat.
Me: 6:07
Brent: 6:15
He hung with 'til about the last quarter.
Felt GREAT! I'm really encouraged with where I'm at. The left hip was a teeny bit sore, but righty was fine.
