Redwoods - Prairie Creek Redwoods SP run

May 10, 2019 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: sunny but chilly...then warm!!

Comments:
Didn’t sleep super-well, in part because it didn’t cool off that much, as well as being a little anxious to avoid getting hassled for not paying ($35!) for our campsite.

We were up by around 6:30, quickly packed up and drove to the rest room visitor center, then cleaned up, made tea, and went for a walk down to the Smith River. Nice morning!
After that, we drove south.

I felt tired – and a little off – all morning. Not sure if it was dietary, or what. We both might’ve just been a little sluggish.

Drove to Prairie Creek Redwoods, taking time to make a stop at “[insert superlative-named] Tree” before parking at the visitor center. Lots of lolly-gagging before leaving fo the run under chilly but sunny skies!

We ran the same loop as ’18: Miner’s Ridge Trail to the beach road, to the ocean (with a mid-run jump-in!), then into Fern Canyon and back via James Irvine trail.

I felt pretty good early on: energy improved, and legs were pretty solid, considering having done my first workout in two months, yesterday. However, once I got to the beach, I felt really stiff: mostly in my ankles (which I hadn’t done STM to in a while) and the hips. Tired, too.

Jumping in the ocean with CA is always a treat (and something, I suspect, will be a cornerstone, memorable experience of our lives together). Jog-hiking through Fern Canyon is always cool, too.
After that, we ran back on the trail. James Irvine is the main route east-west, but the Miner’s trail is way better: less precipitious up and down, and less technical. But the views are great.

Final tally: 11.5 miles, and at least 2k’ of vert? (My watch said three but that’d be crazy).

Rest of the day:
* Sat in the sun (and got sunburned! Crazy)
* Drove down the road to cook brunch
* Drove a little farther (some “Lagoon”) and napped!
* Continued south for a beer and light taco meal at Redwood Curtain (solid beers)
* Finally to Ferndale to stealth-camp for the night, in prep for the big Lost Coast ride!

Good day. Felt better in the PM.
