Exercise Type: Run
Weather: 50s, on and off rain
Comments:
Part Two of the Doubleheader: we met Mike at the Jackson's parking lot off I5 for my first mid-week Hardesty in...seemingly years.
I was feeling OK, but a little worried about ankle stiffness. They were pretty stiff.
Launched in OK conditions around 4:45. I led, with CA behind me. We dropped Mike gradually in the first mile.
Per Hardesty mid-week rules, you run every step, but there's (usually) NO effort to push hard. Callie asked me, "How fast are you trying to go?" and my response was, "NOT".
Instead I was just form-focused as can be:
* hip hinge (butt back, but also "VAG UP" = pevlic posterior tilt)
* trunk/pelvis symmetry
* arm swing
* strong foot-push!
For the latter, I do think there's still an element of lack of push-off that's pissing-off my ankles. So I both let them relax into DF, then try to push off of them.
The effort...wasn't tough, but wasn't easy. I had my customary mid-run lull around mile 2, but a mile later I was feeling pretty strong again. Around then, it started to rain pretty hard, and it got colder, so by the time we'd summitted, both CA and I wanted to immediately descend.
Got to the top at a surprising 68:0x! It felt like a 71-73. That's encouraging.
On the descend, we pushed -- but not before I pushed out a deuce. (Mid-day muffin, possibly with dairy).
After that...the down actually felt GOOD. This is the weird thing: I think with my gut and nervous system, even the DOWNS would feel shitty. That's what I remember most from Rio: my inability run downhill for shit after mile 40. That's such a weird part of the systemic shutdown (that hadn't happened before my gut started to go). Now that I'm better? Downs -- even with my lack thereof -- are feeling good...
...'til I bit it HARD! About two miles down, I caught something with my right foot on a steep, narrow section. I went flying, then OFF the side hill, head-first! Thankfully I didn't land hard, or on anything, but I did draw some blood. And it took some wind out of my sails. CA was about 100m behind; she heard it (but thankfully didn't see it!)
The 3rd mile was pretty pedestrian as I got my wits about it, then the final two miles of descent were faster. I could sense CA getting excited -- with the possibility of a Strava downhill CR -- because she caught up with me!
We pushed pretty good, and finished with a descent of 40:02!
GOOD DAY!
The only bad news was I got gut-rot pretty bad. It's funny - for sure from what I ate, but I also think it's stressful on the gut to:
* grind uphill for an hour (less blood)
* pound down (literally the guts are bouncing around hard!)
BAD gut rot for the rest of the night, and barely ate anything - CA and I, both! No beer (good off-night)
