Waldo Course - PCT TH to Gold Lake Trail to Bobby Lake Trail to "finish"

June 16, 2019 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 60 - 70s, nice

Comments:
Got a bit of a slow start. Between all our fiddling, we didn't get out 'til about 9AM.

Ran with packs on a long, true "leap of faith" run on the Waldo course. Almost no course recon had been done yet. Tons of trees? Snow? Didn't quite know.

The good news was: very little trees, and skeeterz weren't bad! Over the 23.5 miles, we encountered only 24 downed trees - amazing!

The less good news: lots of snow atop Maiden.

Ran pretty darn easy the whole day. My gut was off, for whatever reason (might've been two doses of dairy on Saturday), and that really seemed to sap my energy. Felt flat all day.

Callie, however, felt really good...except her right calf was super-tight. Long-story-short:

* we had an external lifted right shoe for a long time (9mm)
* she didn't like it / the basic x-ray showed only 5-6 mm
* she quit wearing the shoe and used an insert only (5mm, heel only?)
* all her shit started to come back
* when I found out she wasn't using lifted shoes, she went back to the one pair she had left...
* that big change tightened up her calf

Annoying. Thankfully, after we stopped and I worked on it, on a picnic table at Gold Lake CG, it was much better and almost a non-issue the rest of the run.

We moved OK, but it took a long time to get to Maiden Peak trail. After that, it was a SLOG to get up Maiden. I was REALLY tired and having a tough time keeping up!

But "thankfully", with about 2k to go, we hit heavy snow and walked the whole rest of the way. THAT sucked, too, just because it was so slick, uneven and steep. And we had to do a ton of route-finding!

Took nearly 75 minutes to summit, and a long time to find and navigate Leap of Faith, too.

But once we got within a mile of the AS, it opened up completely.

In the back of my mind I wanted to push Maiden Lake to the finish, but we didn't, really. The pace was decent, however, and felt pretty good.

Ankles got pretty tight over those final 4-5 miles, so I really focused on my stride efficiency (Walms -style).

Hightlight might've been jumping into Lower Rosary. CA found a deeper spot just off the shore to jump in. Felt great on a warm day!

(Related note: for the second time in a year(?) we came up on another skinny-dipping woman - this one on Upper Rosary. I was too tired to get much of an eyeful; and out of the corner of my eye, it wasn't "super" motivating!)

Solid run. Hard, though. This speaks to the limitation (somewhat hallow-ness) of my fitness: I can nail the mid-week work, but haven't quite nailed a long run, yet (let alone a hard one).

Rest of the day:

* hauled ass downhill to get to 58 Drive In (which we missed last night, because it closes at 3!)
* home
* sort-of nap
* beers with Alexis and Michah (their kid is 3 weeks old)
* later (and mediocre) dinner at Tacovore
