Rio del Lago - DNF

November 5, 2022 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: mid 50s, intermittent super-light mist

Comments:
Felt cautiously optimistic going into the day. The body work helped; the hamstring felt way better yesterday. Yet I knew deep down it'd be a long-shot to feel good all day.

Solid weather in the AM: not cold, not warm; and dry. Got a good parking spot, readied myself in the van, then got to the start line without a rush.

The focus of the day was to keep things super-chill and efficient as can be. I also planned to take short walk breaks every 1.5 miles.

Started off real easy, running the first couple miles with Bev Abbs and a mixture of guys here and there. She floated ahead on the gradual bike path descent during my first walk break and I never saw her again.

After that, I hung with a couple women and 1-2 men as we made our way across the dam and on the "Johnny Cash Trail", which led eventually to the Natoma loop. Once there, I took a more prolonged walk break and lost them.

Once on Natoma (mile 6 or 7)...things began to get heavy. Not just hamstring (which seemed fine, and only felt tight on the walk breaks), but...just the legs in general.

Then, by the time I hit the first aid station at mile 9.x, my HIPS really hurt! This was odd: lateral hip/greater trochanter soreness, stiffness and outright pain! Weird.

I began to slow a bit. By the fish hatchery and the bridge crossing, I was getting passed.

Then, once on the trail? The wheels came completely off.

So bizarre: I couldn't really run downhill! SO stiff (in the whole leg, but namely the lateral hips).

By mile 13, I knew I was done. By mile 15...I had to walk! Once on the bike path at that point, I "walk of shame'd" the entire way back to Beal's.

Brutal. Weird.

Walked to the Beal's AS, DNF'd, hopped in the van, and drove back to Auburn. I drove immediately to Overlook to get my DB (containing my phone!) but I was too early; they hadn't arrived.

So I went home, grabbed my laptop, drove to Flour Market and imessaged Jake, then went home again to eat and nap.

Bummed. Painful to blow that much money, but I can sleep, knowing I tried!

PM:
• didn't volunteer at No Hands (and didn't see Gloria)
• didn't go out for beers, but had my last two remaining in the house
